Mala Wharf is located just north of Lahaina on the west side of Maui and is directly across the street from the Lahaina Cannery Mall. Mala Wharf, even though it does not get the tourist flow of other beaches on the west side, still is a beautiful strip of coastline with stunning views to offer. And, as you can see from our video, we say coastline because instead of sand, there are large rocks. The rocks don’t keep the surfers away though, and when Mala Wharf is good for surfing, it is very good. Also diving and snorkeling are popular in the small bay and along the partially collapsed pier. The rocks also attract groups of sea turtles, sometimes hundreds at a time during the evenings, who eat the vegetation and seaweed that collect on the shore. Watch our Maui video at the end to sneak a peek at a couple of turtles.
A great way to enjoy Mala Wharf is either a picnic at sunset, or dining at the Mala Ocean Tavern. You will more than likely see the turtles enjoying their meals as well.
To the north, the view is of the Kaanapali resort and on the horizon is the island of Molokai. To the south, the Mala pier juts out and points to the island of Lanai in the distance. There are a few picnic tables along the shore under the mature trees, and there are a few parking spots along Front St.
To get to Mala Wharf you can take Front St. from downtown Lahaina northbound until you pass the Lahaina Cannery Mall on the right. Parking is located after the Mala Ocean Tavern on your left. There are no facilities or restrooms besides the nearby mall or restaurants, but there is an entrance to the south of the pier, where you can park, walk the small marina and have access to showers and restrooms.
